Solskjaer considering Manchester United captain contenders

Intro

The next Manchester United captain will be a ‘cultural architect’ after Antonio Valencia leaves the club in the summer.

United did not trigger the one-year option in Valencia’s contract before its March 1 deadline and the 33-year-old will be released on July 1. Valencia, who has been hampered by fitness and form issues all season, has played just eight times for United this term and only once under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Valencia assumed the full-time captaincy role in the summer from Michael Carrick, who donned the armband for a season where he was restricted to five games due to an irregular heart rhythm. Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic are the other permanent skippers United have had since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Eric Cantona, Roy Keane and Gary Neville were United’s leaders during Solskjaer’s 11 years as a player and the Norwegian has shared the armband around during his four months in charge. Ashley Young has captained United 31 times this season while Paul Pogba, David de Gea and Chris Smalling have also led the team out. Solskjaer says he is considering at least two options but wants a ‘voice’ in the dressing room.
