The Artiste of the Decade award created by Charter House, the organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards to reward hard-working artists was one of the heated categories aside Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year at the just ended 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
On Facebook, the VGMA board threw more light on that category saying;“Over the last decade, they have had the biggest impact, earned multiple nominations across the years in the VGMAs, have been relevant on the Ghanaian music scene and beyond; been very influential in music and showbiz and their craftsmanship in the industry has been phenomenal!”
Artistes on that category were Samini, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, Nacee, Efya, Becca, and Okyeame Kwame with Sarkodie grabbing the award although the majority of people tipped Samini to walk home with the prize.
Speaking for the first time after the awards ceremony, Samini said he was a little disappointed but has moved on because Sarkodie has equally put in lots of work to win the Artiste of the Decade category over the past decade.
He disclosed that he holds nothing against the rapper though people expected him to win.
“I walked off the event after Sarkodie was announced because I was tired and a bit disappointed. And I had done interviews and thought I should win and then again I looked at the shortlist and I had nothing against Sarkodie for winning artists of the decade – looking at how much work he has put it.
“Some people tell me I am their artiste of the decade and that means more to me than just coming on stage to collect a plague. We’ve done that so many times,” he said.
