Jose Mourinho has revealed that he didn’t make any substitutions during Manchester United’s defeat to Juventus due to a lack of attacking options on his bench.
The Portuguese manager sat by without implementing any changes as his side were beaten 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night at Old Trafford.
United are now very unlikely to finish top of their group as a result and will probably have to battle it out with Valencia for a place in the last 16.
When asked about his inaction, Mourinho explained: “Bear in mind Sanchez was in the stand. Lingard was in the stand. Fellaini may have been in the stand or at home as I didn’t see him.
“The only really attacking option was a young 18-year-old lad [Tahith Chong] who has never played in the first team before.
“Given the dynamic of the game, I didn’t feel it was appropriate to bring him on.
“You can’t expect a kid making his debut in a game like this to give you something like scoring a goal.
“So that’s why I didn’t make any changes on the pitch.”
As a result, the Old Lady saw out their win and claimed the three points thanks to Paulo Dybala’s first-half strike.
It was the first time in almost seven years that Manchester United have completed a match without using any substitutions.
