Almost half of Manchester United’s supporters want Ander Herrera to replace Antonio Valencia as club captain in the summer.
The curtain is set to fall on Valencia’s 10-year United career at the end of the season after the club opted against triggering a one-year extension in his current deal.
In a poll conducted by the MEN on Friday which asked fans who they would like to don the armband next, 49 percent of the 6,709 people who voted plumped for Herrera.
Thirty-one percent voted for David de Gea, while 17 percent opted for Paul Pogba.
Three percent said they would give the armband to a different player and Victor Lindelof was a popular choice with users who replied to the poll
Poll-winner Herrera is expected to remain at United beyond the end of the season despite his contract at the club having little over three months left to run.
Reports in England and Spain earlier this week said Herrera is close to agreeing terms with Paris Saint-Germain but MEN Sport understands both United and Herrera’s camp are confident he will stay at Old Trafford.
Manchester United fans, who would you like to see as the club's next permanent captain?
