Manchester United fans will not want to think about the prospect of losing one of the best goalkeepers in world football but given the fact he is yet to sign a new deal, the club must start making plans if the worse comes to worse.
Replacements are already being talked about for United and one man who could replace the Spanish number one at Old Trafford is Everton keeper Jordan Pickford. The England number one’s rise to the top has been rapid in recent months and he was probably England’s best player in the World Cup this summer.
Cast your mind back to before the tournament and England fans didn’t even know who their starting goalkeeper would be, a few months later the Three Lions look as if they can rely on the powerful 24-year-old for the next few tournaments at the very least.
Now Manchester United also want Pickford as their first choice goalkeeper, if De Gea leaves. According to The Sun, Jose Mourinho and his staff are huge fans of Pickford and have been tracking him since February.
The one stumbling block for United is the fact that Pickford signed a big new contract in the summer that runs until 2024 at Goodison Park but the chance to play for Manchester United could prove too hard to resist however it does mean his price will be high.
£60m is thought to be the figure that will be enough to tempt Everton to sell one of their prise assets, which will make Pickford the third most expensive goalkeeper ever, behind Alisson and Kepa.
This would be a huge move if it goes through, but United fans would hate to lose their best player on a free.
