Manchester United are in the driving seat to sign Lorenzo Pellegrini after the club met with the Roma midfielder’s agent in London, according to reports in Italy.
Jose Mourinho is desperate to bolster his midfield options and could lose both Ander Herrera and Juan Mata if they fail to agree new contracts by the end of the season.
Corriere dello Sport report that United have taken a major step to give Mourinho a new midfielder by submitting a ‘huge offer’ to Pellegrini.
The report claims that United have told the midfielder, via his representative, that they are willing to offer more than double his current £35,000-a-week basic salary.
United also have the opportunity to capitalise on Pellegrini’s current situation at Roma as he has a €30 million (£27m) release clause which can be activated at any point in July.
Roma, however, want Pellegrini to sign a new contract and are keen to remove the £27m clause in his existing deal.
Following the departures of Kevin Strootman and Radja Nainggolan in the summer, Pellegrini has established himself as a key part of Roma’s midfield and has two goals and five assists in 13 appearances this season.
