Hazard calls on Chelsea to maintain focus after ‘enjoyable’ win over Manchester City

Good luck trying to figure this Chelsea team out. From a 3-1 disaster against Spurs, to a shaky 2-0 win over Fulham, to a shock 2-1 defeat to Wolves, to a magnificent 2-0 win over Manchester City … like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.

But perhaps after Saturday’s massive win, we can find some consistency by building on this good and confident feeling. Possible future captain Eden Hazard would like nothing more.

“It feels really good, especially after the game in midweek when we lost against Wolverhampton. It was a hard game, especially in the first half, but in the second half we controlled the game and we scored two goals. At the end I think we deserved to win and we need to go on.”

It was the perfect response to the midweek disappointment, both in terms tactics and in terms of the effort, the mentality, and determination shown by the players.

Now, we just have to ensure it’s not a one-off event and we start another unbeaten streak instead of continuing to trade wins and losses.

“When you lose you always need to show something because we are Chelsea. When we lose – for the fans, for the board, for everyone – we just want to win again. Of course, the feeling is even better when you play against what I think is the best team in the country and you win. We can enjoy this.

“We just want to win games and now this one has finished, we can enjoy the win, but we need to be focused for the game on Thursday and next week at Brighton.”

Thursday’s game against Vidi FC will be nothing more than a training exercise with Chelsea already assured of top spot in the Europa League, but to re-establish a winning habit, the team will have to take it seriously nonetheless.

Next up in the league will be Brighton on Sunday before four matches in two weeks ring in the new year and the second-half of the season. The top four race is promising to go down to the wire, but if we can build on this win, we should have a good chance of finishing ahead of at least one of Spurs and Arsenal and get back into the Champions League for next season.
