Barcelona’s Tottenham Champions League draw is bad news for Arsenal and Liverpool

BARCELONA’s draw with Tottenham in the Champions League will be bad news for Liverpool and Arsenal. Because, for all his off-field problems, Ousmane Dembele can be a key player for this club.

Barcelona drew with Tottenham in their Champions League clash to ensure they finish their European campaign with 14 out of a possible 18 points.

And, amid talk that he could be sold to Liverpool or Arsenal when the transfer window reopens in January, Ousmane Dembele made the headlines for all the right reasons.

The France international is a problem for Barcelona. His conduct off the pitch has given Nou Camp chiefs headache after headache.

Just this week before the Tottenham showdown, for example, they had to send club chiefs to his house to get him out of bed.

There have been rumours that Dembele has grown rather attached to his PlayStation 4 console, too. It is said that Fortnite, the popular shoot-em-up game, has his attention more than footballing matters.

But, against Tottenham at the Nou Camp, he let his talents do the talking.

And what a talent he can be.

Dembele is raw but, against Spurs, he delivered. The Barcelona star scored the first goal of the game in the seventh minute, sending Harry Winks into another dimension in the process. Lucas Moura then secured Spurs a point late on.

Make no mistake, the World Cup winner has work to do.

How the group finished:

Barcelona – top, four wins from six, 14 points.

Tottenham – second, two wins from six, eight points.

Inter Milan – third, two wins from two, eight points.

PSV Eindhoven – fourth, no wins from six, two points.

But yesterday night, in club football’s biggest competition, Dembele sent a message.

Barcelona will not let him go if he can repeat his heroics on a regular basis. They have invested too much to flog him.

Liverpool want him, reports say. No chance of that happening, particularly given how well-stocked the Reds’ attack is.

Arsenal, too, are admirers. It was telling in midweek that head of recruitment Sven Mislintat chose to laud Dembele at a time where his Barcelona career had taken another unfortunate turn.
